To do this you should first test the MIDI IN device. To do this switch on <strong class="userinput"><code>MIDI echo</code></strong> (see <a class="link" href="ch01s47.html#prepare_replay" title="Preparare il riascolto">Prepare replay</a>) and press the MIDI read button (<span class="inlinemediaobject"><img src="../docimages/midi_read_button.png"></span>)! Move the mouse pointer over an arbitrary staff!</p><div class="note" style="margin-left: 0.5in; margin-right: 0.5in;"><h3 class="title">Note</h3><p>It is important to move the mouse over a staff because this way you determine the instrument which playes the tone!</p></div><p>If you now press a key on midikeyboard you should hear the appropriate tone played by the instrument attached to the staff the mouse is placed over (see <a class="link" href="ch01s07.html#midi_tab">the MIDI panel</a>). If not then configure the MIDI input device:</p><p>

</p><p>A menu appears that shows all midi input ports. Select one and press OK. If the port doesn't work try a different port.</p><p>If all works then press moreover the insert key (<span class="inlinemediaobject"><img src="../docimages/insert_and_page_button1.png"></span>) and the keyboard insertion button (<span class="inlinemediaobject"><img src="../docimages/keyboard_insertion_button.png"></span>). If you now place the mouse at a certain position on a staff the notes you play on midikeyboard are inserted. <span class="emphasis"><em>Note!</em></span> The keys determine the pitch not the length!
