Locking the screen discourages people from accessing an unattended computer. All
applications and work remain open while the screen is locked, and the selected
screensaver is displayed.

The screen can be locked in one of the following ways:

Press <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guimenu">Kickoff Application Launcher</span></span> &#8594; <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guisubmenu">Leave</span></span> &#8594; <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guimenuitem">Lock (Lock the screen)</span></span>.

Press 
<span class="keycap"><strong>Alt</strong></span>+<span class="keycap"><strong>Ctrl</strong></span>+<span class="keycap"><strong>L</strong></span>.

<span class="mousebutton">Right-click</span> in an empty space on the desktop and
choose <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guimenuitem">Lock Screen</span></span>.

Keyboard shortcuts can be changed in <span class="application">System Settings</span>
under the <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guilabel">Keyboard &amp; Mouse</span></span>. To access these settings,
go to Menu Bread Crumbs. Select <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guilabel">Global Keyboard Shortcuts</span></span>,
in the <span class="trademark">KDE</span>&#8482; component drop-down, select <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guilabel">Run 
Command Interface</span></span>, and locate <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guilabel">Lock Session</span></span>.

A <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guibutton">Lock Screen</span></span> button can be added to the
<span class="application">Panel</span> for quick and easy screen locking. 
<span class="mousebutton">Right-click</span> the <span class="application">Panel</span>, 
select <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guibutton">Add Widgets...</span></span>, select 
<span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guibutton">Lock/Logout</span></span>, and drag it to the proper location on the 
<span class="application">Panel</span>.

To unlock the screen, move the mouse or press a key. Enter the password, and
either press the <span class="keycap"><strong>Return</strong></span> key or press the 
<span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guibutton">Unlock</span></span> button.

If more than one person has a user account on the computer and the screen is
locked by one user, other users can press the <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guibutton">Switch
user...</span></span> button to unlock the screen for their own accounts. They
will not be able to access currently-open work in locked accounts. Users with
locked screens can switch back to their own accounts and unlock their screens
when the computer becomes available.
