In some cases, the wireless network device may need a restricted driver in 
order to operate. The best way to check this is to open the application named
<span class="application">Jockey</span>. To open <span class="application">Jockey</span>, 
go to <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guimenu">Kickoff Application Launcher</span></span> &#8594; <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guisubmenu">Applications</span></span> &#8594; <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guisubmenu">System</span></span> &#8594; <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guimenuitem">Hardware Deivers</span></span>. If the wireless network device requires a restricted 
driver, <span class="application">Jockey</span> will provide that information and 
assist with selecting, installing, and activating the proper driver. When this 
step is completed, wireless connections can be  configured. The machine must be
rebooted before the newly installed, restricted driver will make the wireless
device work.
</p><div class="procedure"><a name="idp3038680"></a><p class="title"><b>Procedure 2. Connecting to a wireless network</b></p><ol class="procedure" type="1"><li class="step"><p>
Ensure that the wireless device is turned on. Most modern laptop computers have
a physical switch for wireless.
</p></li><li class="step"><p>
<span class="mousebutton">Click</span> the <span class="guiicon">NetworkManager</span> in
the System Tray area and select <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guimenuitem">Manage 
Connections...</span></span>.
</p></li><li class="step"><p>
If a connection has been made previously to the selected network, connect to 
that network by <span class="mousebutton">clicking</span> on it in the 
<span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guilabel">Wireless</span></span> tab. If no connection has been made to the 
desired network previously, continue with the following procedure:

<span class="mousebutton">Click</span> the <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guibutton">Add...</span></span> button.

Enter the <acronym class="acronym">SSID</acronym> of the new network. It can be entered
manually, if known. If not, press the <span xmlns:doc="http://nwalsh.com/xsl/documentation/1.0" class="guiitem"><span class="guibutton">Scan</span></span> button to
search for the network.

Enter any other information required for the connection, especially if
the owner has established wireless security for the network.

If the machine has been connected to a wireless network previously, <span>Kubuntu</span>
can automatically connect to the network where it is available. This selection
option should be chosen when the initial connection to the network is being
configured.

When both wired and wireless network connections are available, the wired
connection will be used by default.
