<span class="application">NetBeans</span> <acronym class="acronym">IDE</acronym> 6.9 is an
award-winning integrated development environment available for
<span class="trademark">Windows</span>™, <span class="trademark">Mac</span>™, and
<span class="trademark">Linux</span>™. The <span class="application">NetBeans</span> project
consists of a free, open-source <acronym class="acronym">IDE</acronym> and an application
platform that enables developers to rapidly create web, enterprise, desktop,
and mobile applications using the <span class="trademark">Java</span>™ platform as well
as <span class="trademark">JavaFX</span>™, <acronym class="acronym">PHP</acronym>,
<span class="trademark">JavaScript</span>™, <span class="trademark">Ajax</span>™,
<span class="trademark">Ruby</span>™, <span class="trademark">Ruby on Rails</span>™,
<span class="trademark">Groovy</span>™, <span class="trademark">Grails</span>™, and
<span class="trademark">C</span>™/<span class="trademark">C++</span>™.
<span class="application">NetBeans</span> <acronym class="acronym">IDE</acronym> 6.9 introduces the
<span class="application"><span class="trademark">JavaFX</span>™ Composer</span>, support for
<span class="application"><span class="trademark">JavaFX</span>™ <acronym class="acronym">SDK</acronym>
1.3</span>, <span class="trademark">OSGi</span>™ interoperability, the
<acronym class="acronym">PHP</acronym> <span class="trademark">Zend</span>™ framework, <span class="trademark">Ruby
on Rails</span>™ 3.0, and more. Like most modern <acronym class="acronym">IDE</acronym>s,
it extends its capabilities by using the plugin paradigm, and because of its
long period of development and large number of users who contributed to its
development, there are hundreds of plugins available.

The majority of the <span class="application">NetBeans</span> <acronym class="acronym">IDE</acronym>
code is available under a dual license consisting of the <a class="ulink" href="http://netbeans.org/cddl-gplv2.html" target="_top">Common Development and Distribution
License (<acronym class="acronym">CDDL</acronym>) v1.0</a> and the <a class="ulink" href="http://netbeans.org/cddl-gplv2.html" target="_top"><span class="trademark">GNU</span>™ General
Public License (<span class="trademark">GPL</span>™) v2</a>. No license fee is
required to use <span class="application">NetBeans</span>, and any commercial
application you write does not have to be distributed with the source.
<span class="trademark">Sun</span>™ no longer exists, having been purchased by
<span class="trademark">Oracle</span>™, which now controls <span class="trademark">Java</span>™.

<span class="trademark">Java</span>™ was the original <span class="quote">“<span class="quote">write once, run
anywhere</span>”</span> language tool. However, despite its <span class="quote">“<span class="quote">superior security
model</span>”</span>, it has become a favorite target for malware, and many security
experts are recommending uninstalling <span class="trademark">Java</span>™ altogether.
These security concerns — and the lawsuit — have taken the shine
off of <span class="trademark">Java</span>™ development for many coders and
corporations.
