<span class="application">Lazarus</span> is a free and open source development tool
for the <span class="trademark">Free Pascal</span>™ compiler, which is also free and
open source. The <span class="application">Lazarus</span> <acronym class="acronym">IDE</acronym> is a
stable and feature-rich programming environment for creating stand-alone
graphical and console applications. <span class="application">Lazarus</span>
currently runs on <span class="trademark">Linux</span>™, <span class="trademark">Mac OS X</span>™
and <span class="trademark">Win32</span>™, and provides a customizable source editor and
visual form creation environment, along with a package manager, debugger. and
complete <acronym class="acronym">GUI</acronym> integration with the <span class="trademark">Free
Pascal</span>™ compiler.

<span class="trademark">Free Pascal</span>™ is designed to be able to understand and
compile <span class="trademark">Delphi</span>™ syntax, which is object-oriented
programming. <span class="application">Lazarus</span> will allow you to develop
<span class="trademark">Delphi</span>™-like programs on all of the supported platforms.
Once you write your code, you can link it against the <acronym class="acronym">API</acronym>
widget set of your choice. The project is named
<span class="application">Lazarus</span> because it was started/raised from the death
of the <span class="trademark">Megido</span>™ project. <span class="trademark">Pascal</span>™ was
invented as a language to teach programming to beginners, so it is very
structured and safe to keep them from making mistakes that can plague newcomers
learning less restrictive languages like <span class="trademark">C</span>™ or
<span class="trademark">C++</span>™. The <acronym class="acronym">GUI</acronym> widgets include
double-gradient skins on buttons and other controls.
