<span class="application">Eric</span> is a full featured
<span class="trademark">Python</span>™ and <span class="trademark">Ruby</span>™ editor and
<acronym class="acronym">IDE</acronym>, written in <span class="trademark">Python</span>™. It is based
on the cross-platform <span class="application">Qt</span> <acronym class="acronym">GUI</acronym>
toolkit, integrating the highly flexible <span class="trademark">Scintilla</span>™
editor control. It is designed to be usable as an everyday quick and dirty
editor, as well as being usable as a professional project management tool
integrating many advanced features <span class="trademark">Python</span>™ offers the
professional coder. <span class="application">Eric4</span> includes a plugin system
which allows easy extension of the <acronym class="acronym">IDE</acronym> functionality, with
plugins downloadable from the Internet. Current stable versions are
<span class="application">Eric4</span>, based on <span class="trademark">Python</span>™ 2 and
<span class="application">Qt</span> 4, and <span class="application">Eric5</span> based on
<span class="trademark">Python</span>™ 3 and <span class="application">Qt</span> 4.

<span class="trademark">Python</span>™ bindings to <span class="application">Qt</span> are
available through <span class="trademark">PyQt</span>™, enabling
<span class="application">Eric</span> to use <span class="application">Qt</span> to create
graphical interfaces for the user. <a class="ulink" href="http://www.riverbankcomputing.co.uk/software/pyqt/intro" target="_top">
<span class="trademark">PyQt</span>™</a> is a set of <span class="trademark">Python</span>™
bindings for <span class="trademark">Nokia</span>™'s <span class="application">Qt</span>
application framework and runs on all platforms supported by
<span class="application">Qt</span>, including <span class="trademark">Windows</span>™,
<span class="trademark">Mac OS X</span>™ and <span class="trademark">Linux</span>™.
<span class="trademark">PyQt</span>™ v4 supports <span class="application">Qt</span> 4. The
bindings are implemented as a set of <span class="trademark">Python</span>™ modules that
contain over 300 classes and over 6,000 functions and methods.
